DTF Transfers vs. Sublimation: What's the Difference?
DTF Transfers vs. Sublimation: What's the Difference?
DTF heat transfers and sublimation are both popular full color decoration methods, but they work in very different ways and suit different fabric types. Knowing the difference helps you avoid costly mistakes on your next apparel run.
How Sublimation Works
Sublimation printing turns ink into a gas that bonds directly with polyester fibers, becoming part of the fabric rather than sitting on top of it. This means sublimation only works well on polyester or poly coated materials, and does not perform well on cotton.
How DTF Differs
DTF prints ink onto a film with an adhesive powder layer, then heat presses that layer onto the fabric surface. Unlike sublimation, DTF works on cotton, polyester, blends, and even some synthetic materials, giving it far more fabric flexibility.
Feel and Appearance
Sublimated designs have zero texture since the ink becomes part of the fabric, while DTF sits slightly on top of the fabric with a soft, flexible feel. Sublimation is limited to light colored fabrics, since the ink is translucent, while DTF works on any color.
Choosing the Right Method
If you're working exclusively with polyester performance wear, sublimation is worth considering. For mixed fabric orders or cotton based apparel, DTF is the more versatile choice. See our DTF Transfers vs. Screen Printing comparison for another angle on method selection.
FAQ
Can sublimation be used on cotton shirts?
No, sublimation requires polyester or poly coated surfaces to bond properly and will not transfer onto cotton.
Which method is better for dark fabric?
DTF is the better option for dark fabric since sublimation only works on light colored, polyester based materials.
Is one method more durable than the other?
Sublimation is essentially permanent since it becomes part of the fiber, while DTF is highly durable but sits as a layer on the fabric.
